Palm Pre 'signifies comeback'

A new handset released by mobile device manufacturer Palm represents a "return to form" by one of the pioneers of the market, it has been claimed.

In news which may interest gadget lovers working in sales, the company unveiled its new Pre at the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show earlier this month.

According to the group, the handset's main features include high-speed internet connectivity, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a high-performance, desktop-class web browser and email capabilities, including Outlook EAS.

Thomas Newton from UK Web Media's Mobile-Phones.co.uk brand commented: "The Palm Pre represents a return to form for one of the early pioneers of the personal digital assistant market, which has seen its market share marginalised by the likes of RIM with their BlackBerry series [and] Apple with the iPhone."

Studies published by Canalyst Research in November last year found total worldwide smartphone shipments hit a new peak of 39.9 million in the third quarter of 2008.
